Emperor | Name f the Roman ruler during the imperial age. |
Patricians | The nobles in Roman society. |
Plebeians | The common people of ancient Rome. |
Consuls | The two most important officials in Rome. |
Senate | Roman officials who were appointed by the consuls. |
Veto | To reject or prohibit actions and laws of other government officials |
Checks and Balances | A system that balances the distribution of power in a government. |
Latin | The language of the Romans. |
Arch | A structure that spans a space and supports structure weight above it. |
Aqueduct | A human-made raised channel that carries from distant places. |
Civil Law | A legal system based on a written code of laws. |
Republic | A republic is a government in which citizens have the right to vote and elect officials. |
Legion | Basic unit of Roman army. Each Legion had from 4,500 to 5,000 heavily armed soldiers. |
Maniple | Each Legion was broken up into maniples. A unit of between 60-160 Roman soldiers who formed a solid battle line. |
Constitution | A system of rules by which a government is organized. |
Magistrates | Elected officials who enforce the law. |
Tripartite Government | A government 3 parts, Rome; Assembly, Senate, and Magistrate USA; Legislative, (congress), executive (President), and judicial (supreme court) |
Province | An area of land under political control by a country similar to a state. |
Toga | A garment that adult men wore wrapped around their bodies . Only citizens could wear togas. |
Pantheon | A Roman temple dedicated to all Roman gods. |
Colosseum | An outdoor amphitheater built in Rome. |
Greco-Roman | Having characteristics that are part Greek and part Roman; characteristics of Rome under Greek influence. |
Paterfamilias | The male head of a household or father of a family. |
Centurion | A Roman officer in the military |
