| Empire | land with different territories and people under a single rule |
| emperor | name of the Roman ruler during the imperial age |
| Patricians | the nobles in Roman society |
| Plebeians | the common people of Ancient Rome |
| Consuls | the two most powerful officials in Rome |
| Senate | Roman officials who were appointed by the consuls |
| veto | to regect or prohibit actions and laws of other goverment officials |
| Checks and Balences | a system that balences the distribution of power in a goverment |
| Latin | the language of Romans |
| Arch | a structure that spans a space and supports structure and weight above it |
| Aqueduct | a human-made raised channel that carries water from distant places |
| Centurion | a Roman officer in the military |
| Civil Law | a legal system based on a written code of laws |
| Republic | a republic is a goverment in which citizens have the right to vote and elect |
| Legion | basic unit of the Roman army- Each legion had from 4,500 to 5,000 heavily armed soldiers |
| Maniple | each legion was broken up into maniples.A unit of between 60-160 Roman soldiers who form a solid battle line |
| Constitution | a system of rules by which a goverment is orginized |
| Magistrates | elected officials who enforced law. Rome was broken into 3 branches of goverment- assemblies,senate,and the magisrates |
| Tripartite Goverment | a goverment with 3 parts. Example: Rome had assemblies,senate, and magistrates.USA had legislative(congress), exectutive(President), and judicial(supreme court) |
| Province | an area of land under political control by country,similar to a state or colony |
| Toga | a garment that adult men wore wrapped around their bodies. Only citizens could wear togas. |
| Pantheon | a Roman temple dedicated to all of the gods |
| Colosseum | an outdoor ampitheater built in Rome around 70 A.D. |
| Greco-Roman | having characters that are are partly Greek and part Roman. Specifically: having characters of Roman art done under strong Greek influence |
