Who are the hunters and who are the gatherers in most societies and why is that? | The Men are the hunters and the women are the gatherers. This is because in african societies, men are stronger and more dominant compared to women giving them the more challenging role of killing wild animals. |
What were pastoral societies and how were they different from nomadic hunter-gatherer societies? | They were other africans who eventually learned to domesticate and raise a variety of animals for food. They were called herders, or pastoralists, and they kept cattle, goats, or sheep, unlike the other societies who hunted animals instead. |
When do experts believe that agriculture in Africa began and what might have caused it? | Experts believe that agriculture in Africa probably began by 6000 BC. This may have been due to the Sahara receiving increased rainfall and turning into a savanna but then drying up and forcing many early farmers to move east into the Nile Valley. |
How did agriculture drastically change the way Africans lived? | Some examples are: growing their own food enabled them to build permanent shelters in one location. Settlements expanded because reliable food supplies led to longer, healthier lives and an increased birthrate. |
Explain what the age-set system is in early African societies. | An age set consists of young people within a region who are born during a certain time period. Each age set passes together through clearly identified life stages, such as warrior or elder. |
What were some of the belief systems early Africa? | Many of the local religions were polytheistic, involving belief in one divine creator or supreme god in addition to several secondary gods or semidivine spirits. |
What is animism and how was it used in early African Societies? | African religions generally included elements of animism, a belief system in which spirits play an important role in regulating daily life. Animists believe that spirits are present in animals, plants, and other natural forces. |
What did African societies use to pass down their history and culture? | Few African societies had written languages, so instead, storytellers shared orally the history and literature of a culture. In West Africa, for example, these storytellers, or griots, kept this history alive, passing it from parent to child. |
Who were the Nok People? | West Africa’s earliest known culture was that of the Nok people who lived in what is now Nigeria between 500 BC and AD 200. They were the first West African people known to smelt iron. The iron was fashioned into tools for farming or hunting. |
