What else did Diocletian do during his reign? He divided Roman Empire into East and West.

What did Constantine establish? He established a new capital

What did the Edict of Milan allow people to do in the Roman Empire? It allowed them to worship freely
Edict of Milan also lead Christianity to be what eventually? Lead to be the official religion of the Roman Empire
When the Goths came over to the Roman Empire, how did they treat them? The Romans treated the Goths poorly
What did the Goths have to give in exchange for food? They had to give up their children for food
What kinds of food were they given? They were given dog food
Did the Goths ever forget about this event? No they didn't.

What is a reason that dividing the Empire was a bad idea (did not really save the Romans) The East grew in wealth while the West's economy declined.
What is a second reason that the divided empire wasn't preserving the Roman Empire(s)? East was well fortified and invaders chose to attack the weaker West.
What is the third reason that the divided empire wasn't helping? It was bc the East and West didn't work together
What was Rome's "official" policy toward Christians? If they don't pose no disloyalty or a threat against Rome Romans will leave them alone
What happened to the Eastern Roman Empire after the fall of Rome? It survived for several hundred years as the Byzantine Empire.
What is one example of military cause of the fall of the W Empire ? Legions were stretched too thin and not enough Roman men to suppply them
What did Rome rely too much on that caused the W Empire to fall? They relied on mercenaries
What was the issue with relying on mercenaries? They had little loyal to Rome
What increased that caused the fall of W Empire? There were increased attacks
Who kept attacking them often? The Germanic barbarians
How did over- expansion cause the fall of W empire? 1. Rome couldn't keep enough troops 2. resources to protect 3. govern the vast area
How did over-expansion in funding cause the WRE to fall? There weren't enough funds for Rome's own infrastructure
Even with the roads, Romans couldn't do what still? Even with the road systems, Romans could not communicate quickly enough
What are one of the economic causes of the fall of the Western Roman Empire Heavy taxes and inflation
because the Romans relied so heavly on slave labor what did it cause that lead to the fall of the WRE Lack of new technology and no dependence on farmers
What was the result of war and disease that lead to the fall fo the WRE? Population decline which led to lack of tax base and work force
Huge gaps between the rich and the poor grew and what did the wealthy do? They fled to create their own mini empires to escape taxes
Why was Rome in debt? They were in debt because of overspending on the military
What is a major reason why the WRE fell? They lost their work ethic
Instead of working hard what happened instead? The rich was only concerned with their luxuries, instead they were greedy
What is a examples of political/government cause of the fall of the WRE? Government lost support of people
Why did the gov. lose support? The people had looked up but when Rome was corrupted by the invasions and oppression, they saw no reason to remain loyal.
What was the problem with the gov. leaders? They were corrupted leaders/ officials
What happened between the 26 emperors between 50 yr period? There was an increasing political turmoil
What is a major loss of the Roman traditional values? There was a great lack of patriotism
How did the upper class contribute to the loss of the Roman traditional values? Upper class hesitant to become leaders
What was the other way that they contributed to the fall of WRE? Upper class focused on leisures instead of duty
How were the invasions a part of the fall of the WRE? Odoacer removed the final emperor
When Rome was sacked and raided, who were those two tribes that did so? sacked by Visigoth King Alaic raided by the Vandals
Because the invasions of the Germanic warriors, what did Rome have to do? They had to give up land
What were the causes of the Empire splitting? West became more vulnerable to attacks East grew stronger economically East and West became rivals
How did Christianity contribute to the fall? They worship God, not the emperor Clergy became more involved in political affairs Shift focus from the glory of Rome to God
