What was the capital of the Confederate States of America? Richmond, Virginia
Lincoln asked the southern states to stay in the US but these seven states _____________________. Wanted to have their own country; they would not listen
What advantages did the North make? The North had more men to fight. They had more factories to make uniforms, shoes, gun, cannons and other supplies. They had more railroad. But they had to leave home to go fight in the south. they would need to take supplies. (See chart on page 246)
The northern states were called the ______________. UNION
The southern states were called the _______________. CONFEDERACY
What advantages did the South make? The Southern states would be fighting on their own land and they would be close to home. They needed fewer men and fewer supplies. The South had good soldiers and many good generals. (See page 246)
Who was the South's best general? Robert E. Lee; He did not want war but he could not fight against his home state of Virginia.
Who was the North's best general? Winfield Scott
What did Scott plan to do to win the war? He planned to blockade the South by stopping ships from going in or out of any southern port. He also planned to take control of the Mississippi River. Many people did not like Scott's plan because they thought it would take too long.
What happened at the Battle of Bull Run? It was one of the first battles of the Civil War in Manassas, Virginia, near a stream called Bull Run. People thought the Union would win but the Confederate soldiers held their ground. The South won the Battle of Bull Run.
What was Thomas Jackson's nickname? Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson-He was called this because he stood firm against the North in the Battle of Bull Run.
After the Battle of Bull Run, Lincoln found a new general to lead the US Army. What was his name? George B. McClellan
How did McClellan plan to attack the Confederacy? He planned to march from the coast of Virginia to the city of Richmond. He moved too slowly and he was defeated.
Who led the US Army (Union soldiers) in the Western part of the US? Ulysses S. Grant
Under the leadership of Ulysses S. Grant, the Union soldiers took two Confederated ____________- built along rivers in the west. FORTS
What happened at the Battle of Shiloh? The Confederate army surprised Grant before he could capture a city in Mississippi called Corinth. Both sides fought hard and many men died, but the UNION army won in the end.
Why was Corinth an important city? This was where the Confederacy's main railroads in the west met. These railroad were used to move troops and goods.
Why was the Battle of Antietam important? General Lee (Confederacy) was moving North. General McClellan got the plans for the battle and the North was able to attack. General Lee withdrew and the North claimed victory. 20,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in one day.
At the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, who won? General Burnside (Union Army) surprised General Lee (Confederacy) but the union army could not defeat Lee's army.
In the early battle of the Civil War, there was much fighting. But... The Union could not succed in capturing Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capital. And the Confederates did not succeed in their invasion of the North.
What is a proclamation? An official public announcement
What was the Emancipation Proclamation signed in 1863? The Emancipation Proclamation set slaves free in territories that had rebelled against the Union. This meant that slaves in the Confederate States would be free.
After the Emancipation Proclamation, some __________ Americans joined the Union Army. BLACK They wanted to gifht for the freedom of all black Americans.
Enslaved black Americans who were now free for black ______________ or groups of soldiers. REGIMENTS These soldiers fought well and became loyal citizens.
Why was the Emancipation Proclamation important? The Emancipation Proclamation changed the country. It showed that slavery would end and all states would be free.
What is the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution? This law passed after the war ended in 1862and it brought an end to slavery.
