Life as a slave was not the same in all places. Some slaves worked _____________ their owners. Some slaves worked on large _______________ in groups under a boss. alongside; plantations
What kinds of jobs did slaves do? Slaves did many types of jobs. Some worked in their owners house as cooks or servants. Some worked on buildings, fences and took care of animals. Many slaves worked in cotton fields or on rice or sugarcane plantations.
How were slaves treated? Slavery was wrong. Salves did not get the respect they deserved. Often were told who to marry and how to name their children. Few slaves could read.
How were slave families treated? Often families were separated. Sometimes husband and wife were separated. Owners made slaves work hard and obey. Often had cruel and painful punishment.
What does the Bible say about enslaved people? The Bible teaches that all people, regardless of skin color, are made in the image of God. Every person has the same rights. All people are of value as human beings.
How did The Northern states view slavery? Free states worried that slavery might spread into the territories and slave states would run the country. Even in the North many people thought skin color made people unequal. They did not want blacks to vote.
How did Abraham Lincoln view slavery? He believed that black people should have the same rights given in the Declaration of Independence. He said it was up to the states to decide if black people could vote.
What is the ABOLITIONISTS' view of slavery? 9root word is abolish-which means to get rid of Abolitionists wanted to end slavery in the US. They started newspapers, held meetings, and wrote books to win people to their side. Most people thought the abolitionists were going too far.
How did slavery divide America? People in the South defended slavery as good and necessary. People in the North feared that slave owners were faining too much power. People did not want to compromise.
How did slavery effect the election of 1856? The Whigs did not agree with each other on slavery. Most were against slavery. They started a new party called the REPUBLICAN PARTY. Most Whigs in the South owned slaves. James Buchanan who was from the North but supported the South won the election.
Who was elected President in 1860? Abraham Lincoln-He grew up in Kentucky in a very poor family. He studies hard and liked speaking and politics. He became a lawyer. He joined the US House of Representatives.
In 1860 the Republican Party played a big role in electing the president. What did this party stand for? People in the North liked the republican party because they wanted to protect manufacturing in the North. They were against slavery in the new territories. They promised not to end slavery in the slave states.
When Abraham Lincoln of the Republican Party was elected President in 1860, who voted for him? People in the North voted for Abraham Lincoln but people in the South feared Lincoln would harm the South and they did not trust Lincoln.
What finally divided the American nation? Five states wanted to SECEDE (leave) from the United States. In December, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the US and six other states followed.
Why did state secede from the United States? They said that some free states in the North did not obey the Constitution. They also did not want black people to vote. or become US citizens.
