As the US grew, many people wanted to build a railroad so they could move faster. They wanted to connect _______________ to the eastern States. California- but slavery was still an issue.
What did Stephen Douglas want to do in order to build the railroad? He needed the support from as many states as possible to build the railroad. He wanted the people in the US territories to vote to be free or slave once they became states. Many people in the north disagreed.
Abraham ________________ disagreed with Douglas. He was against slavery. Abraham Lincoln-He was against owning slaves. He said doing right was more important than having freedo to own slaves.
______________ had to make a choice on slavery. People divided into two groups-those for slavery and those against slavery. Many people broke the law. KANSAS-The two sides tried to harm each other.
John _____________ hated slaver and he killed five people who supported slavery. People call the area _______________ _______________. John Brown; Bleeding Kansas The fighting in Kansas further divided the slave states and the free states.
Dred ___________was a slave who had lived with his owner in a free state and he said he should be free since he had lived in a free state. Dred Scott-The case went before the Supreme Court.
What did the Supreme Court rule in the Dred Scott case? The Court said that no state or territory could make slavery illegal. The constitution did not allow the national government to take away people's property. Since slaves were thought of as property, slavery was lega.
How did the Dred Scott case affect the nation? People who did not like slavery were angry. The Supreme Court decision further divided the people.
How did people in the South view slavery? The south was most agricultural and needed workers. Most people in the south said that slavery was necessary to their way of life. They said that owning slaves made life better for both slaves and free people. Many people believed the Bible allowed people to own slaves.
How did people in the North view slavery? The North had more factories and they said northern workers were free to find better jobs. Most people in the north thought it was wrong to treat other human beings as property. They thought that southern culture could not be good because it did not give workers their freedom.
How did Black Americans feel about slavery? Black Americans thought slavery was wrong. They believed the Bible taught it was unkind to make people slaves. Few slaves were alllowed to learn to read.
What does the Golden Rule of Matthew 7:12 say? "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them."
Who was a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church who disagreed with slavery? Daniel Coker-He said the Bible did not permit kidnapping Africans for slavery. The Bible did not allow the slaves' children to be kept as slaves.
