Cold War The competition that developed after WWII between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for power and influence in the world
Iron Curtain Term to describe the division between Communist and non-Communist life
Satellite Nation A country dominated politically and economically by another nation
Containment American policy of stopping the spread of Communism throughout the world
Arms Race A contest between nations to gain weapon superiority
Brinkmanship Pushing another country to the verge of war in order to convince them to follow your demands
Collective Security Nations mutually agreeing to provide military assistance in a time of need
Red Scare Intense fear of Communism and other radical ideas
Witch Hunt A search for someone associated with an event or evidence of someone associated with an event that causes widespread panic
Mutually Assured Destruction (Deterrence) Strategy in which a country commits itself to retaliate with greater force in the event of an attack
Domino Theory The belief that if one country falls to Communism, neighboring countries will too
Conscientious Objector A person who opposes war for religious, moral, or ethical reasons
Détente A relaxation in tension between nations
Glasnost Time of social and political changes in the Soviet Union to bring more freedoms and rights to the people
Perestroika A time of reconstruction of the government and economy in the Soviet Union
