Civics Unit 4 Vocab

TermDefinition
Redistricting The process of redrawing legislative districts
Malapportionment Unequal representation in state legislatures
Legislative Referendum A vote called by a legislature to seek voter approval of the law
Session A meeting of legislative or judicial body to conduct business
Special Session A legislative meeting called for a specific purpose
Line-item veto To veto only a specific part of a bill
Commute To reduce a criminal’s sentence
Felony A type of crime more serious than a misdemeanor. Such as murder, rape, kidnapping, or robbery
Misdemeanor The least serious type of crime; minor crime for which a person can be fined a small sum of money or jailed up for one year
Civil Case A court case in which one party in a dispute claim to have been harmed in some way by the other
Trial Court Type of court in which a judge or a jury listen to the evidence and reaches a verdict, or decision, in favor of one party in the case
Plaintiff The person in a civil case who claims to have been harmed, person who files a lawsuit
Defendant The person in a civil case who is said to have caused the harm; the person who is being sued
City Charter A document granting power to a local government
Ordinance A law, usually a city or a county
Special District A unit of government that deals with a specific function, such as education, water supply, or transportation
Metropolitan Area A large city and its suburbs
Suburb A community that is near a larger city
County Normally the largest territorial and political subdivision of a state
County Seat A town where the county courthouse is located
