Civil War When American fought itself- Northern States vs Southern States
Confederacy The Southern States name during the Civil War
Constitution A document written at the beginning of America that set the tone for what the government should do
immigrant A person who moves to a country different from where they were born to make a new/better life for themselves and/or their family
Industrial Revolution The period of time when the world went from doing things by hand to having machines do more of the work
loyalist Americans who wanted to stay with England when other Americans wanted to be their own country
map scale how much distance a map shows
petition a request for the government to do something like change a law. People who want a change need to get a lot of other people to sign their petition before the government will think about changing
preamble an introduction The US Constitution has a preamble that tells what America is all about and what kind of country we want to be
primary source A document that was written in the time of history. It would be like George Washington's journal or the old hand written laws
repeal Take an old law away. Some laws become old fashioned and repealing them takes them away when they don't make sense anymore.
representative government The USA government setup- people vote for government leaders to represent them. Our Grand Rapids representative goes to Washington DC to make sure new laws are good for Grand Rapids
republic The way the USA is setup for use to elect a president. It is any country that is not ruled by a King and Queen.
Supply and demand Cause things to be expensive. Low supply and high demand items are expensive. Taylor Swift concert tickets. Many people want them, so they are willing to pay more to get them. But there's not enough tickets for all the fans, making them more valuable.
Tariff Taxes a country has to pay when they send goods to be sold in other countries. China pays tariffs when they send things to the USA for selling. USA pays tariffs to sell things we make in other countries.
