Vehicle Surface Prep

QuestionAnswer
Vehicle Preparation all the final steps prior to (before) painting/refinishing.
Initial Washing a complete cleaning of the vehicle to remove mud, dirt, and other foreign matter
Surface Evaluation a close inspection of the paint to determine its conditions.
Paint Film Breakdown cracking, blistering etc of paint surface.
Paint Adhesion Check sand through a small area of the old finish and feather edge it. If the feathered edge does not break or crumble it may be properly adhered.
Preexisting Damage - Damage that existed on the vehicle prior to it coming to your shop, cracking paint, scratches, acid rain damage, etc.
Acid Rain - caused by the release of various chemicals into the atmosphere, the chemicals are absorbed by rain water and form acids.
Industrial Fall out - metallic particles are released into the atmosphere from steel mills, foundries and railroad operations, they adhere to the paints surface and corrode when exposed to moisture
Hard Water Spotting Damage - when rain or tap water dries on the painted surface, the water evaporates leaving hard minerals on the paint surface.
UV Radiation Damage -results from excessive exposure of the paint film to the sun’s radiation.
Chemical Stripping - uses a chemical action to dissolve and remove paint down to bare metal.
Abrasive Blasting - involves using air pressure, a blasting gun and an abrasive medium to remove paint
Machine Grinding - suitable for removing the finish. Grind using a 36/40 grit disc or sandpaper on a grinder or D.A. (dual action sander)
Sanding - prepares the surface for painting and body filler, creates proper adhesion.
Coated Abrasives - sandpaper
Open Coat Sandpaper - prevents clogging of sandpaper, it's good for sanding old paint, body filler, plastic and aluminum,
Closed Coat Sandpaper -provides a finer finish (finer grit) and is commonly used when wet sanding
Grit Sizes - vary from coarse to fine grit, the lower the number the coarser the grit.
Power grinding - fastest method to remove material
Power Sanding uses an air sander to begin smoothing operations, uses a D.A.
Bare Metal Sanding - done to smooth rough metal surfaces.
Paint Sanding - needed when the finish is rough or in poor shape and to level and smooth primed areas.
Block Sanding -back and forth action with the sandpaper mounted on a blocking tool.
Dry Sanding - is done with coarser non waterproof sandpaper, without using water.
Wet Sanding - is done with finer waterproof sand paper, using water to flush away sanded particles.
