also known as Treaty of San Lorenzo. Washington sent Thomas Pickney to Spain in 1795. The treaty granted the U.S. the right to navigate the Mississippi and to deposit goods at the port of New Orleans. Pickney's Treaty
An undeclared naval war between United States and France between 1798-1800. Ended with the Convention of 1800, U.S. gave up all claims against France and France released U.S. from the Treaty of 1778. Quasi-War
Enraged by Jay's Treaty France began seizing U.S ships going to Britain. Adams sent Gerry, Marshall and Pickney to negotiate. They were met by 3 agents whom tried to bride the men before meeting with Prime Minister Talleyrand. Later referred to as X,Y,Z. X, Y, Z Affairs
Laws aimed at people living in the country who were not citizens. Changed waiting time from 5 yrs to 14 yrs to become a citizen. Also said it was illegal to say or print anything false, scandalous, and malicious about the federal gov't or any officer. Alien and Sedition Acts

1803 The Supreme Court ruled part of the Judiciary Act of 1789 to be unconstitutional. Decision marked the 1st time the Supreme Court asserted the power of Judicial Review - power to decide whether laws passed by Congress were constitutional. Marbury vs. Madison

Embargo Act of 1807 halted all trade between the U.S. and Europe.
