Cleveland Cleveland was the democratic presidential candidate for the 1884 election. Because both had issues, the election turned into a mudslinging contest. Cleveland won, becoming the first democratic president since Buchanan.
Fisk “Jubilee Jim” American railroad financier and speculator who attempted in 1869 to corner the gold market with Jay Gould, leading to Black Friday, a day of nationwide financial panic. He was the “brass” of the operation.
Plessy v. Ferguson case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1896. The court upheld an 1890 Louisiana statute mandating racially segregated but equal facilities.
Philippe Bunau-Varilla Leader Of the Old French Canal Company that was eager to build in Panama and Salvage something from their costly failure there. Thus, a Nicaraguan route was turned down for the canal.
Great White Fleet was the popular nickname for the United States Navy battle fleet that completed a circumnavigation of the globe from 16 December 1907 to 22 February 1909 by order of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
Booker T. Washington ex-slave, civil rights activist. Believed that blacks must gain economic equality before they gain social equality. Believed that blacks should be taught useful skills so that whites would see them as useful
James B. Weaver American political leader. He served in the Union army in the Civil War and rose from the rank of private to that of brevet brigadier general. Was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on the Greenback party ticket.
Sitting Bull One of the leaders of the Sioux tribe. He was a medicine man "as wily as he was influential." He became a prominent Indian leader during the Sioux Wars from 1876-1877
Chief Joseph He was chief of the Nez Perce Indians of Idaho. People wanting gold trespassed on their beaver river.Chief Joseph tried retreating to Canada with his people. They were cornered 30 miles from safety and he surrendered in 1877.
Geronimo Leader of the Apaches in Arizona and New Mexico, fought against the white man, who was trying to force the Apaches off of their land. Geronimo had an enormous hatred for the whites. He was, however, eventually pushed into Mexico where he surrendered.
Gould American financier and speculator who with James Fisk and Daniel Drew wrested control of the Erie Railroad from Cornelius Vanderbilt.
