The Civil War Begins

What happened at Fort Sumter on April 12th, 1861? The first shots of the civil war were fired.
What was the outcome of the battle of Fort Sumter? The south wins but this battle triggers fighting between the north and the south.
What was the response in the North to Lincoln's call out to the militia? They are eager to preserve the union.
What was the response in the border states to Lincoln's call out to the militia? They don't want to send troops to fight against other slave states.
Which states were considered the border states? Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware.
What was one of the North's major advantages? Their railroads.
What was the South's strategy to win the war? They planned to wear out the North and hope they will accept secession.
What was King Cotton? The South's cotton is an important crop on the world market.
What was the North's blockade plan? To cut off the South's imports and exports.
What was the view of the Battle of Bull Run? Both sides thought it was going to be one fight and a very short war.
Which group made up the largest number of soldiers? American-born farmers.
What were some hardships in the camps? Staying clean and healthy.
What made life in camps more difficult? The unsanitary conditions.
What did disease do? It killed more people than battles do.
What was new about the military technology? It was more accurate at longer distances.
What did rifles and Minie balls do for this war? Made this war deadlier than past ones.
Why was the war in the west? The North wants to control the Mississippi River and split the Confederate States of America.
Who was Ulysses S. Grant? The Union commander in the west.
Why did the North want New Orleans? They needed it to control the southern Mississippi River.
What is the importance of New Orleans? It is the largest city in the south and a major port.
Who was McClellan? He commanded the Union army in the east.
Why did Lee invade the north? 1)He wanted to move the war out of Virginia so farmers could harvest their crops. 2)To convince Lincoln to make peace with the South . 3)Use food from northern farms.
What was the outcome of Antietam? The North wins. It is the bloodiest one day battle in American history.
What was the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation? Lincoln hopes it will weaken the South's ability to fight.
What did African Americans do after the Emancipation? They rushed to enlist in the army.
What was the 54th Massachusetts? One of the first African American regiments in the North.
