What was in the 10% plan? 10% of voters must sware loyalty to USA, new gov. had to abolish slavery. Then they are part again
What was Republicans Plan for Reconstruction? The Wade-Davis Bill
What was the Wade Davis Bill? It said majority of white men must swear loyalty. Denied right to vote or hold office to anyone who volunttered to fight
What was the Freedmen's Bureau? A bill that provided food and clothing to former slaves, sets up schools for freed slaves.
What were freedmen? Men and women who had been slaves
Who was Charlotte Forten? A women who wanted to improve blacks education. Helped teach Sea Islanders and recruited teachers for freedmens bureau schools
Explain Lincoln's Death He was in a theater 5 days after Lee's Surrender. He was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth in the head and was quickly dead.
Who took over for Lincoln? Andrew Johnson, had remained loyal to Union when Tennessee succeded
What was Johnson's plan for Reconstruction? Johnson said majority of voters had to pledge loyalty and the states must ratify the 13th amednment
What was the 13th Amendment? It banned slavery througout the nation
What happened at the Congress elections? Southern Voters voted Confederate officials. This outraged Republicans
What party were majority of Southerners? Democrat
How did the Republicans retaliate to Southerners being put in Congress? They formed a Joint Committe on Reconstruction to set up a new plan for the South
Were the Southerners not showing that they were pro confederate? NO
What are black codes? Strict laws that severly limit rights of freemen
What were some of the black codes? They said they couldn't vote, own guns, or serve on juries. Some could only work as servants or farm laborers. Some had to have work contracts to not be jailed
What did Republicans think of the black codes? They were furious
What were those who led the opposition to Johnson called? Radical Republicans
Who led the Radical Republicans? Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner was chielf voice for them in Senate
What were the Radical Republicans two main goals? 1) to get rid of the power of the cottonocracy 2)Ensure freedmen the right to vote
Who made up the largest group in Congress? The Moderates
What did the Radical Republicans and Moderates do? They worked together in order to take over Congress!
What was the Civil Rights Act? The civil rights act gave citizenship to African Americans
What was the 14th amendment? Granted Citizenship to all ppl born in USA
What happened to a state the didn't let blacks vote? There representation in Congress was lessened! Egad!
What was.........Radical Reconstruction? It included the throwing out of states that refused to satisfy the 14th amendment, divided south into 5 military districts, Confederate states needed to make new state goves and ratify 14th amend. Blacks must also be allowed to vote.
What happened on election day? The stupid white southerners stayed away from the election polls to show anger but the freedmen came. Republicans gained control of southern governments bc the freedmen came..............stupid white southerners
What happened to Johnson? He was one vote less of being impeached by Congress
Who did Republicans nominate as canidate for President? Ulysses S. Grant
What was the 15th amendment? Forbade states from denying blacks the right to vote
Who was Grant's opponent in the election? Horatio Seymour
