Sejong the Great An important leader at the beginning of the Joseon who strengthened Korea and created the Korean alphabet.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi A samurai who became the shogun of Japan and ordered the invasion of Japan.
Yi Sun-sin A Korean admiral whos skill and dedication saved Korea from the Japanese invasion.
Seoul Capital of modern South Korea
Strait of Myeongyang A narrow strait of water in southwestern Koreawith a reversing current. The location of Admiral Yi's surprise victory.
Battle of Myeongnyang a major battle where Admiral Yi significantly damaged the Japanese navy with only 12 ships.
Confucianism A Chinese philosophy that values social order and education. It became the official policy of the Joseon government.
Isolationism A government policy of severly limiting or forbidding contact with foreigners.
Joseon Dynasty A Korean Dynasty that lasted from 1392 to 1897.
Turtle Ship A type of Korean warship designed by Yi Sun-sin that had a covered top and canonson all sides.
