Why did the British want to colonize India? The British wanted the goods from India, they colonized to trade with them.
What is the EIC (East India Company)? The EIC was a trade organization for the British. It imported goods such as metals and wool. It exported silk, cotton, tea, indigo, etc.
What was the British Raj? The British Raj was the British ruling over India (1858 through 1947).
How did India gain their independence from the British Raj? The British became weak after the Nazi’s and Indians fought between the Nazi’s— they wanted freedom.
What was the partition of India? It is the separation of Muslim and Hindu culture through the land. Hindus stayed in India, Muslims went to Pakistan.
Why did Bangladesh want independence? West Pakistan, where the government was based, was much more powerful and had many other things like political and cultural rights. This made East Pakistan (Bangladesh) want independence from this unfair situation.
How did Bangladesh gain their independence? They began to protest and West Pakistan occupied the area of Bangladesh and India— India overthrew the West Pakistans out and Bangladesh was created.
Why does India and Pakistan not get along? India and Pakistan do not get along because of the separation of religion, and the main thing: Kashmir. The both fight for Kashmir wanting to control over it.
Why does India and Pakistan disagree on who controls Kashmir? Pakistan believes to have control over Kashmir because of its high population of Muslims. India believes they control Kashmir because they have most of the land.
What are the five different castes? Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas, Shudruas, Dalits.
What power does a Brahmin have? They are the top, they are composed of intellectual and religions leaders.
What power does a Kashtriya have? They are second to Brahmins, they are kings and warriors.
What power does a Vaisya have? They are third in power, they are farmers and merchants.
What power does a Shudrua have? They are fourth in power, they are laborers and servants.
What power does a Dalit have? They are untouchable, “unclean,” and they do the dirty work.
How does someone move to a different caste? They have to be good so when they are reincarnated they can be in the higher end of the castes. Other words: you do good things, good karma will come.
