Articles of Confederation The United States’ first form of government. The AOC failed because it gave too much power to individual states.
Representation Political voice. The ability to have an individual or group’s needs, wants or interests voiced in government.
Constitution The document outlining our plan of government in the United States. The supreme law of the land. Is still used today.
Executive Branch This branch is made up of the President, Vice President, and the President’s Cabinet. This branch is responsible for enforcing the laws.
Legislative Branch This branch is made up of Congress, which is the combination of the House of Representatives and the Senate. This branch is responsible for creating the laws.
Judicial Branch This branch is made up of the Supreme Court. This Supreme Court is responsible for interpreting the laws.
Supreme Court The Supreme Court is a group of nine judges, called justices, who have the power of judicial review. Judicial review allows the Supreme Court to determine whether a law is constitutional (legal) or unconstitutional (illegal).
Congress Congress is made up of two houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Congress has the power of creating laws.
Amendment Changes that have been made to the Constitution since it was first created.
Bill of Rights The first 10 amendments to the Constitution. The Bill of Rights provides specific rights and protections to US citizens.
Constitutional Something that is legal. Does not go against any of the amendments outlined in the Constitution.
Unconstitutional Something that is illegal. It goes against one of the amendments outlined in the Constitution.
