Peloponnesian War | A war between Athens and Sparta in the 400´s B.C |
Trojan War | The ten year war waged against Troy by the Greeks caused by the abduction of Helen by Paris and resulting in the burning and destruction of Troy |
Hellenistic | Greek like: heavily influenced by Greek ideas |
Colonization | The act or process of establishing a colony or colones |
Philosophy | A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity; an underlying theory |
Parthenon | Built as a temple for Athena she was the goddess of wisdom and strategy |
Tenant Farmers | People who paid rent, either in money or crops, to grow crops on another persons land. Tenant farmers on ancient Greece were called thetes |
Democracy | Regular citizens get to participate in the government |
Citizenship | An idea first promoted in Athens members in a community are given both rights and responsibilities. A key component of democracy |
Direct Democracy | Style of democracy that works well with smaller populations like in Athens. Each vote counts |
Representative Democracy | Citizens elect others to represent them. Representatives make decisions on behalf of the greater good of the people |
Barracks | At 7 the Sparta boys would go to houses in the barracks |
The Pyrrhic Dance | Famous Spartan war dance |
Hoplite | Greek foot soldiers who carried a big shield |
Hoplon | Name of the shield Hoplite soldiers held |
Phalanx | Rectangular mass military formation |
Doru | Chief spear used by hoplites 7-9 feet long |
Corinthian Helmet | Took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was made of bronze,which in its later styles covered the entire head and neck, with slits for eyes and mouth |
