Polis | A Greek word for city-state. |
Acropolis | A high hill upon which a Greek fortress was built. |
Classical Age | An age marked by great Greek achievements. |
Mythology | Stories about god's and hero's that tries to explain how the world works. |
Persian War | A series of wars between Persia and Greece during the 400 B.C. |
Peloponnesian War | A war between Athens and Sparta in the 400 B.C |
Trojan War | The ten year war waged against Troy by the Greeks caused by the adubtion of Helen by Paris and resulting in the burning and destructuon of Troy. |
Hellenistic | Greek like heavily influneced by Greek ideas. |
Colonization | The acts or processes of estabishing a colony or colonies. |
Philosophy | A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particalar field or actibity ; an underlying theory. |
Parthenon | Built as a temple for Athena. Athena was a godess of wisdom and stragety |
Tenant Farmers | People who paid rent either in money or crops to grow on another person's land. Tenant farmers in ancient Greece were called thetes. |
Democracy | A style of goverment which means "Rule by people" |
Citizenship | An idea first promoted in Athens. Members in a community are given both rights and responsibilties. A key compoent of democracy. |
Direct Democracy | Style of democracy that works well with smaller poputations like in Athens. Each vote counts. |
Representative Democracy | Citizens elect others to represent them in the government . Representatives make decisions on behalf of the greater good of people. |
Barracks | Military housing.Spartan boys were taken at the age of 7. |
The Pyrrhic Dance | Famous spartan war dance. |
Hoplite | Greek solder was the foot solder called a hoplite. |
Hoplon | Name of the sheild that a hopliete held. |
Phalanx | Was a recctangular mass military formation used by anchient Greeks. |
Doru | Also referd to a Dory. Cheif spear used by hoplites 7-9 feet long |
Corinthian Helmet | Took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was made of Bronze which in its later styles covered the entire head and neck, with slits for eyes and mouth. |
Agora | A public opened space used for assembiles and market |
