Polis A Greece word for city-state.
Acropolis High hill in which a Greek fortress was built.
Classical Age Age marked by great Greek achievements.
Mythology Stories about gods and hero's that tries to explain how the world works.
Persian War Series of wars between Persia and Greece during the 400's B.C.
Peloponnesian War War between Athens and Sparta in the 400's.
Trojan War A ten-year war agenst Troy by Greeks caused by the abduction of Helen by Paris and resulting in the destruction of Troy.
Hellenistic Greek like heavily influenced by Greek ideas.
Colonization Act or process of establishing a colony or colonies.
Philosophy Set of ideas or belifes relating to a particular field or activity; an underlining theory.
Parthenon Built as a tempel for Athena (goddess of wisdom and stratagy.
Tenant Farmers People who paid rent, either in money or crops, to grow crops on another person's land. Tenant farmers in ancient Greece were called thetes.
Democracy Style of government: "rule by the people" regular people particapate in government.
Citizenship Idea promoted in Athens, members are given rights and responsibilities.
Direct Democracy Style of democracy that works well with smaller populations like Athens, each vote counts.
Representative Democracy They elect others to represent them in government representatives make dicisons in the great or good of the people.
Barracks Military housing, 7 year old's go there and training and education was founded by the state.
The Pyrrhic Dance Famous Spartian war dance.
Hoplite Greek soldiers, foot soldiers, called hoplite, had shields and spears.
Hoplon The name of shield that hoplite soldiers held.
Phalanx A rectangular mass military formation.
Doru/Dory Chief spear used by the hoplites 7-9 feet long.
Corinthian Helmet Took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was made of Bronze, which in its later styles covered the entire head and neck, with slits for eyes and mouth.
Agora A public open space used for acembalies and markets.
