Philosophy | Set of ideas or belifes relating to a particular field or activity; an underlining theory. |
Parthenon | Built as a tempel for Athena (goddess of wisdom and stratagy. |
Tenant Farmers | People who paid rent, either in money or crops, to grow crops on another person's land. Tenant farmers in ancient Greece were called thetes. |
Democracy | Style of government: "rule by the people" regular people particapate in government. |
Citizenship | Idea promoted in Athens, members are given rights and responsibilities. |
Direct Democracy | Style of democracy that works well with smaller populations like Athens, each vote counts. |
Representative Democracy | They elect others to represent them in government representatives make dicisons in the great or good of the people. |
Barracks | Military housing, 7 year old's go there and training and education was founded by the state. |
The Pyrrhic Dance | Famous Spartian war dance. |
Hoplite | Greek soldiers, foot soldiers, called hoplite, had shields and spears. |
Hoplon | The name of shield that hoplite soldiers held. |
Phalanx | A rectangular mass military formation. |
Doru/Dory | Chief spear used by the hoplites 7-9 feet long. |
Corinthian Helmet | Took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was made of Bronze, which in its later styles covered the entire head and neck, with slits for eyes and mouth. |
Agora | A public open space used for acembalies and markets. |
