weathering and erosi

QuestionAnswer
Weathering the process by which rock materials are broken down by the action of physical and chemical processes
Chemical weathering Chemical weathering
Erosion the process by which wind, water, ice or gravity transports/moves soil and sediment from one location/place to another
Deposition hen sediments are deposited, or dropped off, in a different location/place. This process changes the way earth looks over time. Ice/Frost wedging
Ice/Frost wedging form of physical weathering that involves the repeated freezing and thawing of water in areas with extremely cold weather; water seeps into small cracks in rocks and other materials and can break the rock when it expands
Oxidation reaction of rock minerals with oxygen, thus changing the mineral composition of the rock. (RUST)
Lichen/moss plants that release different acids on rocks which dissolve it and break down the chemical bonds
Acid precipitation- rain, sleet or snow that contains a high concentration of acids wears away rock over time
Carbonation when the acid rain combines with rocks, and changes their chemical formations.
Abrasion the grinding and wearing away of rock surfaces through the mechanical action of other rock or sand particles. (rock against rock)
Animal action type of mechanical weathering where animals dig into ground and loosen soil.
Exfoliation outer layer of desert rocks undergo repeated stress as the temperature changes from day to night. (Heating & Cooling)
Plant growth- when parts of a plant grows into a rock and cracks it
Mass wasting the downhill movement of large mass of rocks or soil due to gravity

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
