Classical Age | an age marked by great Greek achievements |
Mythology | stories about gods and heroes to explain how the world works |
Persian War | a series of wars between Persia and Greece during the 400's BC |
Peloponnesian War | a war between Athens and Sparta in the 400's BC |
Trojan War | The ten year war waged against Troy by the Greeks,caused by the abduction of Helen by Paris and resulting in the burning and destrution of Troy |
Hellenistic | Greek like: heavily influenced by Greek ideas |
Colonization | The act or process of establishing a colony or colonies |
Philosophy | a set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity; an unlying theory |
Parthenon | Built as a temple for Athena, she was the goddess of wisdom and stradtegy |
Tenant Farmers | people who paid rent,either in money or crops,to grow crops on another persons land. Tenant farmers in ancient Greece were called thetes |
Democracy | Greeks formed a style of goverment which means "rule by the people"regular citizens get to participate in goverment |
Citizenship | an idea first prompted in Athens.Members in a community are given both rights ad responsibilities.A key component of democracy |
Direct Democracy | style of democracy that works well with smaller populations like Athens.Each vote counts. |
Representative Democracy | citizens elect others to represent them in goverment. Representatives makes decisions on behalf of the greater good of the people |
Barracks | Military housing with military training and education for 7 and older year old boys |
The Pyrrhic Dance | famous Spartan war dance |
Hoplite | Greek soldier's war the foot soldier called "hoplite". Hoplites carried large shields and long spears |
Hoplon | name of the shield that Hoplite soldier held |
Phalanx | was a rectangular mass military formation used by the ancient Greeks |
Doru | also reffered to as a dory,Chief spear used by the Hoplites.7-9 feet tall |
Corinthian Helmet | took its name from the city-state of Corinth.It was made of Bronze,which in its late styles covered the entire head and neck,with slits for eyes and mouth |
Agora | a public open spaced used for assemblies and markets |
