Amendment 9 The rights listed in the Constitution and Bill of Rights are not the only rights people have. Just because a right isn’t mentioned doesn’t mean people don’t have that right.
Amendment 10 Powers not given to the United States government by the Constitution or not prohibited from the state governments stay with the state governments or the people.
What is meant by Freedom of Religion? You have the right to practice any religion you want or no religion at all (free exercise clause). You also are protected from the government setting up an official religion (establishment clause).
What is meant by Freedom of Speech? You can share your ideas and opinions freely.
What is meant by Freedom of the press? You can publish information, ideas, and opinions. Although many people think this freedom only applies to newspapers, TV stations, etc, it applies to you as well.
What is meant by Freedom of petition? You can ask the government to change its laws or policies. You can do this through a formal document signed by other people. You can also do it by writing to officials or even by protesting.
What is meant by Freedom of assembly? You can get together with other people but your group must be peaceful.
What is meant by the Right to Bear Arms? People can own a gun or other weapon.
due process Fair procedures must be used to decide if you are guilty of a crime.

Which amendment is being violated? A 20 year old college student starts his own newspaper, which often prints articles making fun of the local mayor. The mayor is angry and gets his aides to take the papers off the stand before they can be distributed. First Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? A woman is being tried for grand theft auto. The prosecuting attorney forces her to take the stand and testify. Fifth Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? A student wears a button to school urging people to vote for a certain candidate for President of the United States. The principal tells the student to remove the button because he doesn't like the candidate. First Amendment
Which amendment is relevant in this scenario? A dentist is being sued for $500,000. He wants a jury to hear the case but the judge refuses his request. Seventh Amendment
Which amendment is relevant in this scenario? The government tries a man for theft and loses the case. A jury says he is innocent. The district attorney who prosecuted the case is mad and promises to keep trying him until they get a jury to convict him. The defendant thinks this is unfair. Fifth Amendment
Which amendment is relevant in this scenario? A man living on a quiet residential street puts up a giant billboard on his front lawn. The billboard has neon lights advertising a new breakfast cereal that the man invented. The city has zoning laws against this type of sign in a residential neighborhood and demands that it be removed. Tenth Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? Sara, an eighteen-year old college student, is arrested for stealing a classmate’s term paper. She asks for a lawyer to help defend her. The judge tells her if she is smart enough to be in college, she is smart enough to defend herself. Sixth Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? A neighbor is suing the Joneses because a tree in the Joneses’ yard fell on their roof during a hurricane. The neighbors want the Jones family to pay $850 to have their roof repaired. Mr. Jones requests that a jury be present to hear this case. The judge says it is not necessary since the amount of the repairs is is so small. Seventh Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? Carolyn is arrested for shoplifting a candy bar from a neighborhood convenience store. At trial, she is found guilty. The judge decides that the appropriate punishment is to cut off Carolyn’s hands so that she will not be able to shoplift again. Eighth Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? Mr. Reynolds, an avid hunter, opens the door of his home one day to find agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms outside. They inform him that certain provisions of a new federal law allow them to confiscate his rifles so that he may not engage in terrorist activities or plot against the United States government. They have no evidence that he is connected to any such activities. Second Amendment
Which amendment is being violated? Because of the budget deficit, the United States government is looking for ways to cut costs. They have announced a plan during peacetime to house unmarried soldiers in the homes of American citizens who do not have children. Third Amendment
