What is globalization? The increasing global movement of jobs, weapons, drugs, media, goods, etc.
What are some positive effects upon globalization? Wider selections of goods and services. Stronger, diverse economy. Peace with the countries we trade with.
What are some negative effects upon globalization? Viruses spread faster; humans, computers, plants, etc. Work displacement. Pollution.
What is colonization? Settling among and establishing control over another group of people.
Why did Europeans want to colonize? They wanted wealth, the spread of Christianity, and national pride. (Gold, God, Glory)
Who colonized what territory? Spanish - Southwest US, Mex., the Caribbean, western South America. French - midwestern of US, Mississippi River, Haiti. Portugal - Brazil England - northern Canada, the eastern US coast, few islands of the Caribbean.
How did the Colombian exchange effect Native Americans, African-Americans, and European-Americans? Africans: Were stolen to be sent to cross the Atlantic to work in slavery. Natives: Diseases (smallpox) were introduced and it killed many. Europeans: Found religious freedom and lots of economic opportunities.
How large is the Amazon Rainforest? It is about the size of the US.
What are the Amazon’s benefits? It has 390 billion trees in which provides a lot of oxygen and lots of biodiversity. We use the Amazon for food and medicine.
What/who is destroying the forest? Farmers are destroying the forest, they are burning the Amazon to plant their soybeans.
What is Cuba and the United States relationship since 1898 (Spanish-American war)? They became allies and traded, it was a bittersweet connection between Cuba and the United States.
How has imperialism affected our relationship with Cuba? It interrupted and altered the Cuban independence movement, but utilized military force, economic coercion, and paternalistic attitudes.
What was the rise of the Castros? Dictator, Fidel Castro, took a key role in the Cuban Revolution.
What is embargo? An official ban or particular activity with a particular country.
How is our relationship with Cuba connecting once again? We are trading with them a lot, having a more settle feelings between Cuba and the US. These feelings depend on the type of President.
What is the crisis between Nicolas Maduro and Juan Guiado? The crisis is establishing who is in power.
How has Maduro held so much power despite all the pressure against him? Many people that dislike Maduro are leaving; leading to more support throughout Venezuela, the people really like him, he gives support to his people.
Why do people migrate? What are the push and pulls? People migrate for various of reasons; push: better jobs, safety/peace, religious freedom, education, etc. Pulls: war/violence, natural disasters, scarce job opportunities, political oppression, etc.
What are the arguments for and against immigration? Against: Immigrants will overflow, no placement for them. Immigrants are a major source of crime. Arguments for: Diversity, more education throughout, etc.
