Comp Gov Base Vocab

Term one vocabulary to keep fresh on (KBAT 1+2+3)

TermDefinition
Informal Politics Interactions between politicians, government officials, institutions, political parties and citizens (directly affect government decision)
Formal Politics Interactions between citizens themselves, their values and other seemingly non-political actors (indirectly influence formal politics)
Governments Systems of institutions that facilitate decision-making and resource allocation (who gets what, where and when)
Political Efficacy A citizen’s sense of their own capacity to understand, participate and influence politics in their community (High efficacy means greater education and influence, low efficacy means marginalized and disengage)
National Sovereignty States and their citizens have the right to make decisions and take action within their borders, free from interference from outside forces (right to independence)
Political Culture The values, practices, and traditional patterns of political interaction in a society (the way politics is done)
Political Socialization The process of exposing citizens to their political culture (agents are family, school system, religion, etc.)
Cross-cutting and corresponding cleavages 1. Relate to each other, different views 2. Polarized, us Vs. them
Correlation and causation 1. Not definite, relationship 2. A definite case of one variable impacting another
Political liberalization Increasing a citizen’s right and liberties
Reform Gradual change, incremental, alters existing system, transforms society/economy/political system
Coup D'état Sweeping change of leadership of a system, though system tends to survive
Revolution Often sudden, extreme fundamental change (system replaced by a new one)
Two-turn-over A rule instated by Huntington requiring power to be transferred peacefully between opposing sides TWICE before government can be considered democratic
Corruption Dishonest, unethical or illegal activities that lead to unfair treatment, discrimination and the loss of resources (killer of democracy) IS STOPPED WITH TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Interest Articulation Individuals and groups express their needs/wants/demands to decision makers
Interest Aggregation Different needs/wants/demands combine together to become a purpose course of action (policy)
Interest Groups Deal with limited range of issue; represent narrow segment of population on specific issues, organize, educate public, and lobby leaders
Interest groups pluralism In lib dems interest groups are separate from the government and try to influence the government with a method called pluralism
Plebiscite A vote that aims to get the opinion of the public (non-binding)
Referendum A vote that allows public to make key decisions in politics (binding)
Regime Institutions, practices, and rules that endure when one government is replaced by another (THE SYSTEM)
Government Particular group of people in power at any given moment, empowered to make political decisions
Centralized/De-centralized Focused in one national government/spread out over several layers of government
Concentrated/Separated Focused in a small number of individuals or institutions within same level of government (no checks)/Spread out over many (many checks)
