barge A broad, flat bottomed boat
cartouche A carved tablet representing a scroll (a roll of paper) with rolled up ends
harpoon A barbed spear, used for hunting large fish
hieroglyphics Writing made up of pictographic (picture) symbols
Khemet Ancient Egyptians name for their land
levees A bank (high pile of dirt) built along a river to prevent flooding
mummification The process of preserving the bodies of the dead
nobles People belonging to a high class that has special social or political status
obelisks A four-sided pillar that ends in a pyramid, used as a monument
papyrus A plant that is made into strips and pressed into material on which a person can write
peasants People in a low ranking social class, who worked in the fields
Pharaoh The ruler of ancient Egypt
pyramid A huge structure that was used as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh and high officials
