Uncle Tom's Cabin | - Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this book that described how terrible the life of a slave was. - Many northerners were shocked at how bad it was and made them even more against slavery. |
Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 | -This repealed the Compromise of 1820 (36/30 line dividing Louisiana territory. - Divided Kansas and Nebraska and Popular Sovereignty will determine free/slave states. - Northerners gave in b/c they wanted the railroad to go to California. |
John Brown | - VERY against slavery and fought to end it. - Took over a Federal arsenal in the South (weapon storage), to give to slaves |
Dred Scott | - Sued his owner b/c his owner took him to a free state . - Supreme Court decided he couldn't sue because slaves were just property, not people. |
Cotton Diplomacy | - South tried to get European countries to buy their cotton, so they could make money. |
