The American People
| Term | Definition |

| civics | the studies of rights and duties of citizens |
| citizenship | They agree to follow a set of rules and to accept the government’s authority |
| service economy | a country's economy that is based on service careers more so than it is based on manufacturing |
| popular soveriegnity | government by consent of the governed |
| values | broad ideas about what is good or desirable, and are shared by people in a society. |
| Institutions | These are not buildings or places but sets of ideas that people have about relationships, obligations, roles, and functions |
| Naturalization | a legal process by which a person from another country can become a citizen |
| aliens | non-citizens living within a country |
| Immigrants | people who move permanently to a new country |
| deport | send them back to their own countries. |
| government | is the ruling authority for a community, or society |
| public policy | a course of government action to achieve community goals |
| budget | a plan for collecting and spending money, |
| direct democracy | all the citizens met to debate government matters and vote firsthand. |
| representative democracy | The citizens choose a smaller group to represent them, make laws, and govern on their behalf. |
| republic | a system of limited government in which the people are the ultimate source of governmental power. |
| Majority rule | citizens agree that when differences of opinion arise, they will abide by what most people want. |
| authoritarian | power is held by an individual or a group not accountable to the people. |
| totalitarian | state, the government’s control extends to almost all aspects of people’s lives. |
