Missionary Person who teaches his or her religion to others who have different beliefs
Conquest The Capture or taking of something by force
Columbian Exchange Movement of people, animals, plants, diseases, and ways of life between the Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere
Encomienda A large piece of land, usually given to it's owners by the kind of Spain
Colonist A Person who lives in a colony
Colony A settlement far from the country that rules it.
Mission A religious settlement where missionaries live and work.

Plantation A large farm with many workers who live on the land they work.
Conquistador Spanish conqueror
Society A group of people forming a community
Ally A friend who will help in a fight.
Why did Columbus set sail? To find a shorter route to the Indies
Why was Cortes able to defeat the Aztecs? He had metal armor, muskets, horses, and allies
Who conqured the Incas? Pizzaro
What happened first in the Spanish search for gold? de Vaca explored the southwest
What happened after the death of Esteban? Coronado continued the search for gold.
Why did the Spanish want slavery? It made them rich.
What was Las Casas point of view of slavery? He wanted slavery to end.
What was life on an encomienda like? Slaves worked without pay and expected to be Christians.
What were the groups in the New Spain society? Peninulares Creoles Mestizos Africans & Indains
Which colony was founded after the defeat of the Incas? Lima
How did Columbus impact the Americas? Columbus showed Europeans how to get there faster.
