John Quincy Adams | Secretary of State in James Monroe's cabinet; Worked in the Convention of 1818 and with Andrew Jackson when they signed the Adams-Onis Treaty |
Latin America | Another name used to describe the countries of Central and South America and Mexico |
Adams-Onis Treaty | Created by Andrew Jackson; Treaty where Spain agreed to give Florida to the United States |
Cede | To give property or land to another country/person |
Annex | To add land or a new state to a country |
Convention of 1818 | Convention in 1818 where the US and Great Britain established the border between Canada and the US; 49th parallel on the map |
Industrial revolution | Changes in the late 1700's, such as new inventions, that led to a change in the main form of work; Farming overthrew manufacturing as the best way to become rich |
Lowell Mill Girls | Young women who found work in factories in Lowell, Massachusetts |
Samuel Slater | Immigrant from Great Britain who memorized the design of a steam-powered factory and brought it to the US |
Richard Arkwright | Created the water frame; Spins and produces yarn and string without the use of a human |
Urbanization | When people who lived in rural places immigrated to factories in cities |
Interchangeable parts | The process where people made specific parts that made repairs easier and much quicker |
Eli Whitney | Created the concept of Interchangeable parts; also created the cotton gin |
Telegraph | A device that sends electrical signals across long distances very fast; uses Morse Code: dashes, clicks, and pauses |
Irish | Immigrants who built railroads for trains and canals for boats; lived in Northeastern cities like New York, Chicago, and Boston |
German | Immigrants who left Germany because of wars and came in search of farm land in the Midwest |
Emigrant | A person who leaves their country because of push factors |
Immigrant | A person who leaves their country and goes to a new country because of pull factors |
Potato Famine | A blight on potato's in Ireland that caused millions of Irish to die and millions more to immigrate to the US |
Era of Good Feelings | Time period during James Monroe's presidency where there was political harmony; the federalists were gone |
American System | An economic system introduced by Henry Clay; stated that the US could grow its economy to become self-sufficient and not have to rely on foreign countries for supplies |
Henry Clay | Congressman from Kentucky who introduced the idea of the American system |
Erie Canal | A waterway that connects New York to the Eerie Canal; man made; created an access to the Atlantic Ocean so manufacturers could send their products to foreign countries |
Nationalism | A very strong feeling of unity and pride in one's country; especially after a victory over another country |
Sectionalism | Having pride in section or reign in a country, not for the whole country |
Tariff | A tax placed on imports from other countries; passed to protect American's who sent manufactured goods to foreign countries |
Infrastructure | The transportation and communication system in a nation |
Cotton Gin | A device that separated the seeds from the cotton; 50 times faster than a human; produced 50 lbs instead of 1 lb a day |
Memphis | "Cotton Capital"; Farms along the Mississippi river; city where all cotton was shipped and taken down the Mississippi |
Deep South | Southern States that relied on cotton farms; Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas |
Slave codes | Laws passed by slave states that stated how to govern and punish slaves |
Spirituals | Religious Folk songs; sung by the Slaves; Slaves were very religious |
Monroe Doctrine | Stated that Europe wasn't allowed to colonize the Western Hemisphere |
