TermDefinition
James Monroe He created the Monroe Doctrine during the era of good feelings. He was also the 5th president.
John Quincy Adams He was a founding father and he helped to create the Adams-Onis Treaty when he was James Monroe's Secretary of State.
Monroe Doctrine This was document that said that no colonies in Europe could claim anymore land in the Americas.
Latin America This was a combination of Central America, South America, and Mexico.
Adams-Onis Treaty This was a Treaty that peacefully ceded Florida to the U.S. from Spain.
Cede To legally hand over land to another person or country.
Annex This is to acquire land or to increase the size of a country; to add to a document.
Convention of 1818 An agreement that set the borders between Canada and the U.S. at the 49th Parallel. This was between Britain and America.
Industrial Revolution This is a time when agriculture was no longer the center for the U.S.
Lowell Mill Girls They were girls who worked for little to nothing in a factory in Lowell, Massachusetts
Samuel Slater He was from Britain and he memorized the plans for the first steam-powered factory and brought them to the U.S. which started the industrial revolution in the Americas.
Richard Arkwright He was one of the inventors who came up with the ideas for the water frame.
Urbanization This is what happens when a farm is converted into a factory surrounded by a city type thing.
Interchangeable Parts Making standardized parts for specific things mostly guns so that everything was easier to replace.
Eli Whitney He came up with the idea to make things easier to repair by making them all the same. He also standardized the cotton gin.
Telegraph Is a device that sends electrical messages via Morse code across a series of wires and to another person.
Irish They were immigrants who came because of a famine and they worked on railroads and canals.
German These are immigrants that came because they wanted a better life for them selves.
Emigrant A person who exits the country that they were living in.
Immigrant A person who is entering another country.
Potato Famine This was a famine that forced so many Irish out of there homes and killed so many more.
Era of Good Feelings This was the era in which there were no political parties and so there was a long amount of peace. This happened during James Monroe's presidency.
American System This was a system which Henry Clay suggested that america should relay less on other countries and more on ourselves.
Henry Clay He was a congressman who could voice his ideas and theory's.
Erie Canal This was the most famous canal in the U.S. this canal connected New York and the Great Lakes.
Nationalism When a person feels immense pride for the country that they live in.
Sectionalism When someone feels like a specific part of their country is better than the rest.
Tariff This was a tax that made things that came in from somewhere other than america have a higher price than things in america.
Infrastructure This was how people got around the nation and how they talked to one another.
Cotton Gin This was a machine that made it easier to clean cotton. This also did 50 times the work of one person in the same amount of time.
Memphis This was were factory owners from the north and cotton farmers from the south met up and traded cotton to gain a profit. This was also called the cotton capitol of the south.
Deep South The Deep South Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas. These are the states that most relied on cotton to make a profit.
Slave Codes These were laws that the south passed so that the slaves would not up and revolt against them.
Spirituals Songs that the slaves sang to express their faith. They only could here songs at church so they were all religious.
