James Monroe He was the president after the War of 1812 and during a time when there was only 1 political party.
John Quincy Adams Served on President Monroe's cabinet as Secretary of State and came up with 2 major border treaties; the Adams-Onis Treaty and the Convention of 1818.
Monroe Doctrine Policy written by John Quincy Adams and declared by James Monroe that if Europe stayed out of the Western Hemisphere, the Americas would stay out of Europe.
Latin America Territory consisting of South America, Central America, and Mexico.
Adams-Onis Treaty Treaty where Spain ceded Florida to the US.
Cede To give territory or property to.
Annex To make a new addition to a country or nation.
Convention of 1818 Treaty that set the border between USA and Canada at the 49th Parallel.
Industrial Revolution Economic rise in urbanization in the 1700s where farming gave way to manufacturing as the most popular way to earn money.
Lowell Mill Girls Girls that worked in the textile mills in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Samuel Slater Immigrated from England and created the first steam-powered US factory.
Richard Arkwright Created the water frame.
Urbanization A process in which people move from their farms in the country to factories in cities.
Interchangeable Parts A process in which every item had the same parts, which made repairs shorter timed and cheaper.
Eli Whitney Invented he cotton gin ad conceptualized the interchangeable parts system.
Telegraph First version of texting over wires using Morse Code.
Irish Immigrated to the US due to potato famine; worked on railroads and canals; they lived in the northeast.
German Immigrated to Midwest and worked on farms.
Emigrant Someone leaving a country due to famine, war, poverty, etc.
Immigrant Someone entering a country after leaving their home country.
Potato Famine Sickness in potatoes which led to a mass Irish immigration in the USA.
Era of Good Feelings During James Monroe's presidency; only one political party.
American Sytsem System conceptualized by Henry Clay where there would basically be a national Triangular Trade.
Henry Clay Proposed American System and was a Kentucky Congressman.
Erie Canal Waterway from New York to Great Lakes; man-made.
Nationalism Pride in your country and feeling all others are worse.
Sectionalism Miniature patriotism (pride in one's nation); one section or region.
Tariff Tax on imports; increased independence of America.
Infrastructure System of transports and communicating.
Cotton Gin Sped process of purifying cotton by removing seeds.
Memphis Largest cotton producer in the south. Farmers trade along the Mississippi.
Deep South AL, MS, LA, GA, SC, and TX which were all heavily reliant on the cotton trade.
Slave Codes Laws passed to keep slaves in line.
Spirituals Folk songs meant to express the faith of slaves.
