TermDefinition
James Monroe He was the 5th president of the United States, he was also the last president from the formation of the US generation. He served during the "Era of Good Feelings".
John Quincy Adams He was James Monroe's Secretary of State. His main accomplishments was settling the Florida dispute with Spain in the Adam-Onis Treaty and attending the Convention of 1818.
Monroe Doctrine James Monroe gave this speech to try and prevent future European countries from colonizing the Western Hemisphere even more. He warned that America would fight them to protect their foreign policy.
Latin America This refers to South America and Mexico.
Adams Onis Treaty Spain ceded Florida to the US, represented by John Quincy Adams, after the Seminole Natives and Andrew Jackson incident.
Cede To give up something, usually power of territory.
Annex During war this means to claim authority over another state.
Convention of 1818 This convention settled the dispute between Great Britain and the US on the border of Canada, by setting it at the 49th parallel.
Industrial Revolution A time during the late 1700s when farming became more popular than manufacturing for work.
Lowell Mill Girls They were some of the first girls to work in a textile factory in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Samuel Slater He was an British immigrant that illegally managed to start the first steam-powered factory in the US.
Richard Arkwright He patented the water frame.
Urbanization When more people start living in factory cities rather than rural farms.
Interchangeable parts The same parts of a certain object mass produced to make repairs quicker and cheaper.
Eli Whitney He started the use of interchangeable parts and built the first cotton gin.
Telegraph A device that can send messages long distances quickly using Morse Code.
Irish Immigrants who left because of a famine, and settled in northeastern US to work on railroads and canals.
German Immigrants who left because of a political revolution and for more farmland, settled in mid western US to work on farms.
Emigrant Someone who leaves their country for a new one.
Immigrant Someone who goes to live in a foreign country.
Potato Famine What made the Irish leave Ireland for the US, killed millions of Irish.
Era of Good Feelings This was during James Monroe's presidency when there was political harmony.
American system Henry Clay's system to make US' economy completely self-sufficient.
Henry Clay He was a congressman from Kentucky and proposed the American System
Erie Canal A man made waterway connecting the Great Lakes to New York City.
Nationalism Loyalty and pride in to a country.
Sectionalism A devotion to only a certain region of a country.
Tariff A tax enacted by government taxing all imported goods, in order to try and increase US' manufacturing.
Infrastrucutre All of a nation's physical communication and transportation.
Cotton Gin Device invented by Eli Whitney, that quickly removed the seeds from cotton.
Memphis The "Cotton Capital" of the South because of its location on the Mississippi River.
Deep South States whose main income was cotton. For example, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas.
Slave codes Laws passed by the government to try and prevent future slave rebellions.
Spirituals Religious folk songs slaves often sung about their faith.
