Voyages A long journey by water to a distant place.
Christopher Columbus An Italian navigator who was funded by the Spanish Government to find a passage to the Far East. He is given credit for discovering the "New World".
Arawak/Taino Indigenous Amerindian peoples who inhabited the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean at the time of Columbus.
Kalinago (Caribs) Indigenous Amerindian peoples who inhabited the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean at the time of Columbus.
Canoes Indigenous Amerindian peoples traveled by water using these.
Caciques Political and Religious leader of the Tainos.
Oubuto Political/ Military leader of the Kalinagoes.
Caribbean The area that lies between continental North and South America and comprises the Caribbean Sea.
Territory an area, region, or piece of land.
Technology Things that make life/ work easier.
Exploration The action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it.
Conquistadores Spanish 'conqueror' or soldier in the New World. They were searching for the 3-G's: gold, God, and glory.
Bohio A Taino Hut.
History A record of past events or people.
Historical sources Something that tells us about history.
Primary Sources First-hand accounts of events and experiences.
Secondary Sources. Information consist of descriptions and explanations that are created after a historical event has already taken place.
Timeline A diagram that lets the reader see important events in order.
Chronological order (Time Order) Events are arranged in the order in which they happened.
Treaty A formal agreement between the governments of two or more countries.
Decade A period of ten years.
Century A period of 100 years
Archeology The study of ancient cultures based on artifacts and other remains.
