21st Amendment Amendment that repealed the Prohibition (18th Amendment)
FDIC Government insurance that insures customers deposits if a bank fails.
Bank Runs Widespread panic in which many people tried to withdraw their money from the bank on the same day.
Bonus Army Veterans of WW1 who marched on Washington D.C. and demanded their bonus money.
Eleanor Roosevelt FDR's wife and supporter of the New Deal. Changed the role of the First Lady.
Great Depression Economic crisis beginning with the stock market crash in 1929 and lasting into the 1930's.
Franklin D. Roosevelt President who greatly increased government spending (New Deal) to help Americans during the Great Depression.
Relief, Recovery, Reform The three goals of FDR's New Deal.
Bank Holiday FDR declared all banks would be closed March 6, 1933. Only financially stable banks were allowed to reopen.
Social Security Act Guaranteed Retirement Payment at the age of 65. Also established care for handicapped and dependent mothers and children.
Works Progress Administration (WPA) New Deal Agency that created jobs for workers on bridges, roads and buildings during the Great Depression.
Causes of the Great Depression Over production/Under consumption, increased debt, uneven distribution of wealth.
Dust Bowl A period of dust storms that greatly damaged farmland. Caused by poor farming practices, drought and high winds.
Mexican Repatriation Law approved by President Hoover to send Mexican American immigrants back to Mexico.
Hoovervilles Shanty towns named after President Hoover.
New Deal The name of President Roosevelt's programs for getting America out of the Great Depression
Fireside Chats Radio conversations Roosevelt had with America about what he was doing to get America out of the Great Depression.
Black Tuesday October 29, 1929, the day the stock market crashed.
Bull Market When stocks are priced high.
Bear Market When stocks are priced low.
