Voyages | A course of travel or passage, especially a long journey by water to a distant place. |
Christopher Columbus | An Italian navigator who was funded by the Spanish Government to find a passage to the Far East. He is given credit for discovering the "New World". |
Exploration | The action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it. |
Conquistadores | Spanish 'conqueror' or soldier in the New World. They were searching for the 3-G's: gold, God, and glory. |
History | A record of past events, actions and people. |
Historical Sources | Something that tells us about history. |
Primary Sources | Eyewitness accounts of history. They include letters, diaries, speeches, and interviews. |
Secondary Sources. | Information consist of descriptions and explanations that are created after a historical event has already taken place. |
Timeline | A diagram that shows when events took place during a given period of time. |
Columbian Exchange | The exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and technologies between the Americas and the rest of the world following Columbus's voyages. |
Slavery | A system of enforced servitude in which some people are owned by other people. |
Plantation | A large farm in tropical and subtropical climates that specializes in the production of one or two crops for sale, usually to a more developed country. |
Triangular Trade | A three way system of trade during 1600-1800s. Africa sent slaves to America, America sent Raw Materials to Europe, and Europe sent Guns and Rum to Africa. |
New World | The name given by Europeans to the Americas( North and South America), which were unknown to most Europeans before the voyages of Christopher Columbus. |
Old World | The regions of the world that were known to Europeans before the discovery of the Americas; Europe, Asia, Africa. |
Social Stratification | A system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy. |
Middle Passage | A voyage that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and the West Indies. |
Auction | The public sale of something to the highest bidder. |
Conquest | Taking control of a people or place through military force. |
Colony | A territory that is legally tied to a sovereign state rather than completely independent. |
Slave Branding | The process in which a mark, usually a symbol or ornamental pattern, was burned into the skin of a living slave. |
