Political Processes

| nationalism | a nation's desire to create and maintain its own state |
| centripetal force | forces that unite the people within a country |
| centrifrugal force | forces that divides people within a country |
| imperialism | a broader concept that encompasses all the ways to influence other countries (colonialism, neocolonialism, etc.) |
| colonialism | a type of imperialism that involves people settling onto the land of another country |
| Berlin Conference | the conference that divided Africa into states with little to no regard of the existing cultural and political boundaries |
| self-determination | the right to choose their own sovereign government w/o external influence |
| decolonization | the undoing of colonization (freeing a state) |
| genocide | an organized mass killing directed at a certain ethnic group |
| Cold War | a period of diplomatic, political, and military rivalry b/w the U.S. and the Soviet Union |
| satellite states | a state dominated by another state politically or economically |
| devolution | the process in which one or more regions are given more autonomy from a central unit of government |
