Introduction to Political Geography

TermDefinition
Sovereignty The power of a political unit over it's own affairs.
Nation A group of people with commonalities.
Nation-state A group of people that can be both a nation & a state.
Multinational State A country that contains more than 1 nation.
Autonomous Region A defined area within a state that has a high level of sovereignty.
Semi-autonomous Region A state that has a degree of, but not complete, self rule.
Stateless Nation A cultural group with no independent political identity.
Multi-state Nation When a nation has a state of its own, but it stretches its border across another state.
Ex. of a nation-state Iceland & Japan
Ex. of a multinational state Canada
Ex. of an autonomous region Åland Islands
Ex. of a semi-autonomous region Navajo Indians
Ex. of a stateless nation Kurdistan
Ex. of a multi-state nation Korean Nation
