Foundations of Government

| Political Parties | a group of people who try to determine public policy and operate government by getting their candidates elected to office |
| Cabinet | a group of people who advise the president on foreign and domestic issues |
| Domestic | inside the country |
| Foreign | outside the country |
| Partisan | a strong supporter of a party, cause, or person |
| Embargo | an official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country |
| Sedition | conduct or speech convincing people to rebel against the authority of a country |
| alien | a foreigner, especially one who is not a naturalized citizen of the country where they are living |
| Nationalism | patriotic feelings |
| Neutral Rights | the right to remain neutral (taking no side) when two countries are at war with each other |
| Impressment | taking of men into the military by force, with or without notice |
| Permanent Alliances | treaty between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes |
| Precedent | an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide |
| Protective Tariffs | a tax on imports meant to protect a country’s manufacturing |
| Jurisdiction | the official power to make legal decisions and judgments |
