| declare | to say something officially or publicly |
| treaty | a formal agreement between two or more countries |
| ally | a country that has agreed to help and support another country |
| occupy | to take control of a place by military force |
| troops | soldiers in a large groups |
| mutiny | the act of refusing to obey the orders of a person in authority |
| depose | to remove somebody from power (e.g. king, political leader) |
| abdicate | to give up the position of being king or queen |
| monarch | a person who rules a country, for example a king or a queen |
| uprising | a synonym for rebellion |
| siege | a military operation in which an army tries to capture a town by surrounding it |
| withdraw / retreat | to move back from a place |
| surrender | to admit that you have been defeated and want to stop fighting |
| deputy | the name for a member of parliament |
| torture | to hurt somebody in order to punish them or make them tell you something |
| abolish | to officially end a law or a system |
| Inquisition | the organization set up by the Roman Catholic Church to punish people who opposed its beliefs |
| guild | an organization of people who do the same job or who have the same interests |
| restoration | the act of bringing back a system or a law that existed previously |
| confiscate | to officially take something away from somebody as a punishment (e.g. land) |
| exile | the state of being sent to live in another country for political reasons |
| rivalry | a state in which two people or countries are competing for the same thing |
| annulment | the act of stating officially that something is not legally recognized |
| emancipation | the act of liberation |
| inherit | to receive money, property and other things from somebody when they die |
| regent | a person who rules a country because the king or queen is too young, old, ill, etc. |
| regency | a period of government by a regent |
| concordat | an agreement between the Roman Catholic Church and the state |
| overthrow | to remove a leader or a government from a position of power by force |
| expropriate | to officially take away private property from its owner for public use |
| disciple | a person who follows the teachings of a religious or political leader |
