| Reconstruction Era | The time period between 1865-1877 which followed the Civil War. During this time the South worked toward rejoining the North and rebuilding. |
| Ten Percent Plan | The plan proposed my President Lincoln which required 10% of the population to pledge loyalty to the United States in order to rejoin. |
| Wade-Davis Bill | A plan developed by Republicans who believed President Lincoln did not punish the South enough. The plan required a majority of citizens to take a loyal oath, disavow acts of secession abolish slavery, and refuse to pay war debts. |
| 13th Amendment | Ended slavery within the United States. |
| 14th Amendment | These born/naturalized in the United States have equal rights and citizenship. |
| 15th Amendment | Granted all men the right to vote regardless of race. |
| Freedmen's Bureau | An organization which was created to help formed slaves and poor whites in the South following the Civil War. |
| Black Codes | Law passed in order to restrict African Americans from their civil rights. |
| Civil Rights Act of 1866 | Defined citizenship and determined that all citizens were equally protected under the law. |

| Segregation | The forced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or area. |
| Jim Crows Laws | Local and state laws which supported the idea of forced segregation in the South. |
| Ku Klux Klan | A group formed following the Civil War. The group was against civil rights for African Americans and believed in white supremacy. The group used terror and violence the prevent and intimidate African Americans from using their civil rights. |
| Plessy vs. Ferguson | The court case which set the precedent for "separate but equal" facilities in the United States. |
| Sharecropping | The procession which tenant lives on a plantation, or farm, they are provided housing and tools by the owner in return the sharecropper provides the owner with a portion of their crops. |
| Poll Tax | A tax to be paid in order to vote. |
