Classes of Enzymes

Main classes of enzymes

1. Oxidoreducterase catalyzes redox reactions Subclasses: Oxidases, Reductases, Dehydrogenases
2. Transferases Catalyze the transfer of functional groups between 2 substrates Subclasses: transaminases, kinases
3. Hydrolases catalyze hydrolysis reactions - the addition of a water molecule causes the bond to break Subclasses: Lipases, proteases, nucleases, carbohydrases, phosphatases
4. Lyases Catalyze the addition of a group to a double bond or the removal of a group to create a double bond without involving hydrolysis Subclasses: dehydrases, decarboxylases, deaminases
5. Isomerases Catalyze the conversion of a substrate into another compound that is isomeric with it. Converts D isomer to L isomer or L isomer to D isomer Subclasses: racemases, mutases
6. Ligases Catalyze the bonding of 2 substrate molecules, with participation of ATP Subclasses: synthases, carboxylases
