1st Amendment Freedoms of Religion (Free Exercise Clause/Freedom of Religion and Establishment Clause/Separation of Church and State/freedom from religion), speech, press, assembly and petition
2nd Amendment protects the right to bear arms
4th Amendment protects against unreasonable searches and seizures-Exclusionary Rule (illegally seized evidence cannot be used in court. This is how the 4th amendment is enforced.
5th Amendment Key is the protection against self incrimination. Miranda Rights (Rights read to suspects when being questioned-moved protection against self-incrimination to the questioning period)
6th Amendment Key is the right to a lawyer
8th Amendment Protects against unreasonable fines/bail-and against cruel and unusual punishment.
9th Amendment Reserved rights: not listed directly in the Constitution. (Ex. Privacy)
10th Amendment Reserved Powers for states. Those powers not delegated to the national government nor denied to the states are reserved to the states.
13th Amendment Abolished Slavery
14th Amendment Equal Protection Clause and the Due Process Clause
Selective Incorporation the gradual application of the Bill of Rights to the states
15th Amendment Gave Black Males the right to vote
17th Amendment Direction election of Senators by voters
19th Amendment Gave women the right to vote
22nd Amendment 2 term limit for the President
25th Amendment Presidential Succession
25th Amendment Part 1 If the office of VP becomes vacant then a President can replace-needs a majority vote in both houses of Congress
25th Amendment Part 2 If the president is temporarily incapacitated-powers can be signed over to the VP and then regained by the President
25th Amendment Part 3 The majority of the cabinet and the VP can report to Congress that the president is not capable of carrying out their duties. It then takes a 2/3s vote in both houses of Congress to remove the president
26th Amendment 18 year olds the right to vote
23rd Amendment 3 electoral votes for DC
24th Amendment Abolished Poll Taxes
