Marbury v. Madison- what did the case rule? Case ruled that Judiciary Act of 1789 was unconstitutional and established judicial review
What did Jefferson think about a large standing army? He distrusted strong standing armies
What was Jefferson's goal when he sent representatives to France in 1803? He wanted to buy the city of New Orleans
What was the outcome of the envoy's trip to France? Napoleon offered to sell the entire territory plus New Orleans for 15 million
Lewis and Clark were given what directions by Jefferson? They were to collect scientific data (geography), Obtain info about Indians in the region, map the route to the pacific, find the source of the Missouri R.
What was the Embargo Act that Jefferson signed? Why did he sign the law? Banned exportation of any US goods to any country. He wanted to force France and England to respect America and its citizens
What was the condition of the US military as it entered the War of 1812? America was unprepared for war
What lasting effects did the US get with the War of 1812? The US had a renewed sense of nationhood that would inspire activities of industry, roads, etc
What was the Hartford Convention and what was its lasting impact on US History? NE was defiant. Wanted financial aid from gov. 2/3 vote in congress, abolition of slavery and 3/5 clause, president could only serve 1 term, no president from same state could run in a row. Death of the federalist party
What is nationalism and what caused a surge in nationalism in 1814? Nationalism-Loyalty that people feel to a nation. The end of the War of 1812 brought about nationalism in Americans
What were the parts of the Missouri Compromise? MO would come in as a slave state, Maine comes in as free state, Mo compromise line-north of the line free except Missouri

Commonwealth v. Hunt MA ruled labor unions were not illegal conspiracies
Monroe Doctrine-Why was it such a momentous declaration? Monroe warned Europe to not intervene w/ America and colonization in west was over. Significant bc Monroe made the announcement without military might to back it up

What spurred the market oriented nation economy in the early 1800s? Push for cheap land, immigrants, inventions, better roads, canals, and railroads

Why did the immigrants from Ireland and Germany seek refuge in the United States and how did they assimilate? Irish had the potato famine and Germans wanted to preserve their culture and language. Irish stayed mostly on the coast. Germans settled in NY, Baltimore, and midwest
What is nativism and the cult of domesticity? Nativism-Fear and opposition to open immigration Cult of domesticity-glorified the traditional role of the women as homemakers
