Rhetoric Art of skillful speaking
Logic Rational thinking
Tragedy Plays that told stories of human suffering, that usually ended in disaster.
Classical Referring to elegant, balanced forms of traditional Greek works.
Comedy Humorous plays that mocked people or customs.
Exile Banished/Not allowed to return to place of banishment.
Heliocentric Based on the belief that the sun is the center of the universe.
Ally A nation or power that cooperates and will come to another's aid.
Assimilate Absorb or adopt another culture.
Assassanation Murder of a public figure, usually for political reasons.
Pythagoras Mathematician who developed the Pythagorean and theorem, which explains the relationship between the sides of a right triangle.
Aristotle Plato’s student who developed ideas about government.
Alexander the Great Son of Philip of Macedonia, At age 20 he began to organize Greek forces to conquer Persia. They overwhelmed Persia, pushing them back into India.
Socrates An Athenian stonemason and philosopher who he lounged around the marketplace asking fellow citizens about their beliefs.
Philip II/Philip of Macedonia Defeated Athens and Thebes. Gained the throne in 359 B.C. Built a superb army. Formed alliances with many Greek City-States through bribery, diplomacy, and threats.
Hippocrates Physician who studied the cause of illnesses and looked for cures. His Hippocratic oath set the ethical standards for doctors.
Stoics They urged people to avoid desires and disappointments by accepting life calmly. They preached high moral standards. such as the idea of protecting all human rights, including women and slaves.
Euclid Mathematician who wrote “elements” became the basis for geometry.
