Chapter 8 Political parties and interest groups
Term | Definition |

Political Parties | an organization that seeks to achieve power by electing its members to public office |
Interest Group | any organized group whose members share a common goal and try to promote their interests by influencing government policymaking and decision making |
Two-Party System | a political system in which two parties dominate the electoral process and control the government |
Special Interest | a group that seeks to influence government policymaking and decision making to further its particular goals; an interest group |
Pluralism | the idea that political power should be distributed and shared among various groups in a society |
Political Action Committee | (PACs) an organization that raises and distributes funds to candidates running for office |
Lobbying | an organized effort to influence the policy process by persuading public officials to favor or oppose action on a specific issue |
Public Policy | a plan or course of action initiated by government to achieve a stated goal |
Conservatism | An ideology that favors limited government and private enterprise to achieve social & economic goals |
Liberalism | Ideology that government can and should play an active role in society to achieve goals |
Political Platform | Explains the core beliefs of a political party on essential issues (immigration, abortion, taxes, etc) |
Environmentalism | A social movement dedicated to protecting the earth's life support systems for us and other species. |
Propaganda | Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause. |
Name-calling | An attack on a person instead of an issue |
Testimonials | Using an expert or celebrity to sell or support a product or cause. |
Bandwagon | Attempt to persuade people to think, support, or buy something because it is popular or everyone is doing it. |
Card-stacking | Telling one side of the story as though there is no opposing view |
Just Plain Folks | Effort to make people think that a candidate is just like voters. Candidates wear hard hats, eat hamburgers, or talk to voters. |
