| What was the First Continental Congress? | It was a meeting held in September of 1774, of leaders from the 13 English colonies. They met in Philadelphia at Carpenters' Hall to talk about their problems with Great Britain. |
| What is a congress? | It is a formal meeting to discuss a matter of common interest. |
| What was the Second Continental Congress? | This meeting was held in May of 1775 at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia.They agreed to try one last time to make peace with Great Britain. George Washington was chosen to lead a new army. |
| What was the Continental Army. | This was the new army of the colonies whose leader was George Washington. |
| Declaration of Independence | This document was written by Thomas Jefferson in two days. It declared the independence of the colonies from Great Britain. |
| Who was Thomas Paine? | He wrote and published a pamphlet that gave reasons why the colonies should break away from Britain. |
| Who was John Dickinson? | He wrote the letter to King George, asking to resolve the differences between England and the colonies. King George refused to read the letter. |
| Who was King George? | He was the ruler of Great Britain who taxed the colonists and refused to work with them to find peace. |
| Who was Thomas Jefferson? | He wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was a representative from Virginia. |
