| Zimmerman Telegram | sent from Germany in 1917 asking Mexico to attack the U.S. |
| Selective Service Act | All men ages 21-35 to register for the military |
| illiterate | unable to read and write |
| Liberty Bond | sold by the government to raise money for the war |
| pacifist | a person who objects to war and believes it is evil |
| socialism | government owns all factories and farms |
| exposure | experience something (like war or visiting a new culture) |
| embark | to make a start (like on a journey) |
| armistice | an agreement to stop fighting |
| epidemic | rapid spread of a contagious disease |
| prerequisite | something that is necessary before getting a privilege |
| Fourteen Points | President Wilson's peace plan |
| self-determination | the right of national groups to have their own territory and forms of government |
| reparations | cash payments for destruction during war |
| negotiate | to confer with others to reach an agreement |
| Treaty of Versailles | most important treaty of the Paris Peace Conference, ended WWI |
| League of Nations | an association to protect all countries, large and small |
| Offensive | an all out attack during war |
