Roanoke The first attempted colony also known as the "Lost Colony" (Located in Virginia)
Jamestown This was the first permanent English settlement established in the Americas, specifically in Virginia
Colonize To send people to another area to start a civilization there
Indentured Servants Colonists who received free passage to North America in exchange for working without pay for a set number of years
Staple Crops Crops grown on a smaller scale to be eaten daily (wheat, barley, oats)
Cash Crops Crops grown in large quantities to be sold for money (Indigo, Rice, Tobacco, and late Cotton)
Slave Codes Laws passed in the colonies to control slaves
Bacon's Rebellion An attack led by Nathaniel Bacon against Native Americans and the colonial government in Virginia
